CANNONBALL FACTORY HOUSES THE OFFICES OF THE ONLINE VINTAGE AND HANDMADE GOODS RETAILER ETSY IN HUDSON NEW YORK.

THE BUILDING, NAMED FOR ITS ROLL AS THE SITE OF CANNONBALL MANUFACTURING DURING THE CIVIL WAR, IS NOTABLE FOR ITS PARTICULAR STRUCTURAL SYSTEM OF CROSS-BRACED TRUSSES, FROM WHICH THE FLOORS OF THE BUILDING ARE HUNG. AIMING TO PRESERVE THE CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY OF THE BUILDING, WHILST SHARING THE BEAUTY OF THUS SYSTEM WITH THOSE WHO OCCUPY IT, A SCHEME WAS DEVELOPED THAT MAINTAINED ITS HISTORIC QUALITY AND ALLOWED FOR THE ENTIRETY OF THE BUILDING TO BE OCCUPIED BY THIS DYNAMIC AND PROGRESSIVE COMPANY.

ON THE THIRD FLOOR OF THE BUILDING, THE FORCES ARE CARRIED BY THE CROSS-BRACED TRUSSES WHERE DIVERTED THROUGH NEWLY ENGINEERED STEEL MEMBERS, WHICH ENABLE CIRCULATION ACROSS THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE FLOOR, THROUGH THE INTRODUCTION OF A FULLY GLAZED FOURTH FLOOR MEZZANINE, LIGHT ACTS AS A LANTERN, ILLUMINATING THE FLOOR BELOW. THE CRISP DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW IN THE PROJECT UNDERSCORES THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS BUILDING. A NEW INDUSTRIAL ELEVATOR AND CORE WILL CONNECT THE FIVE FLOORS AND REACH BEYOND THE ORIGINAL ROOFSCAPE, MARKING THE BUILDING AND BUSINESS, AS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF HUDSON’S RECENT REVIVAL.
